Meta4 can mean many things to many people! On the creative side, it refers to the literary term (a metaphor is transference of meaning) and to the fictional concept of the “metaverse” (a shared digital reality) so named by the famed science fiction author Neal Stephenson. On the practical side, it specifically refers to the four foci of the company: Broadband Users & Gamers, Interactive Developers, Broadband Internet Service Providers and MMOG Resource Seekers.
As gamers ourselves, we have a passion for all kind of games – especially MMO’s. Founders John Lombardi, Dave Cerra, Christopher Miller, and Jason Yarnell began the company after successfully building Chivalry, one of the most popular MODs for the Tribes game community.
Our founders started Sojourn Development to build a professional game entry for the MMO market like no one had ever imagined. Their intriguing story about an alternate world where one awakens and must re-discover themselves needed to be told…and to tell it right required some never before seen technology for building and playing games. They began to develop a game and the tools to tell their story. John and David broadened the team with others to help build the vision and extend both the technology and open up the market to a wider audience.
Meta4 Interactive, Inc. was born from this beginning.
We looked toward a persistent world and a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG). We were building a game for a larger audience of users who wanted to play games their way. As the production team grew we learned about middleware and technologies that were not addressing the needs and the budgets of developers. Our unique procedural technologies grew – worlds, terrain, and animation. We recognized a number of solutions all developers could benefit from and that broadband users could enjoy. As we progressed, we understood what was needed to get new games to the market – from development to distribution. We took our combined knowledge, solutions and technology to create Meta4 .
